Texas A&M University (TAMU) PBSI 107 Introduction to Psychology Exam 1 Practice

The main idea here is how perception depends on both the strength of the stimulus and the observer’s mental state, explained by signal detection theory. This theory separates sensory ability from decision processes, showing that detecting a signal is not just about how strong the stimulus is but also about the observer’s criterion or bias. When a stimulus is strong, it’s more likely to be detected (more hits, fewer misses). When the stimulus is weak, factors like alertness, motivation, and expectations shift the decision threshold, making a person more or less likely to say they detected something, which can increase both hits and false alarms. Subliminal refers to stimuli below conscious awareness and doesn’t capture the decision-making aspect; latent and manifest content are Freudian terms about dream interpretation, not about perception thresholds.
